We are mostly interested in hiking she wants to see and hike mountains , waterfalls, possibly some shopping local-type shops and good food, desserts, etc. Is Asheville the most central place to stay? I'm just starting to do some research and would appreciate feedback.
A little concerned about the safety of Asheville based on some things I've read Thank you!! Wendy, if your 15 yo daughter is like most 15 yo's, she would never forgive you if you took her to Brevard instead of Asheville for spring break.
As for hiking, what your family will enjoy most depends on your physical conditioning. Late March is still early for wildflowers along the trail, but perfect for ridgeline hikes and waterfall hikes.
Pisgah all the way to Mt. Mitchell, including a gentle rolling section through the south and east sides of Asheville, and offers great hiking with easy access from the BRP as well as state highways that access the BRP. I was just there two weekends ago with my 18 year old daughter for a college visit. It is a great town. She hung out with mom and dad for awhile, but then wandered around on her own and checked out some coffee shops, an antique mall, the bookshops, vintage clothing stores, etc.
Absolutely no worries about safety. Truly, it did not even enter my mind. We all enjoyed Dobra Tea. They have bubble tea and all sorts of real exotic teas.

Plus , think about fly fishing lessons at Davidson River Outfitters … your guys will enjoy it.. Very predictable. The notion that Asheville is an unsafe place to visit is completely ridiculous, as ten million visitors per year can attest.
Brevard is a nice place to walk around for an hour or two. Both Brevard and Asheville are great - different, but great. Brevard is a rather small town 45 minutes away, with a handful of good restaurants and it's much closer to scads of hiking and waterfalls. We've enjoyed both places. Here to chime in on antique stores in Asheville. Brevard is a great lunch spot after doing some waterfall hikes in Pisgah National park. But it will be inconvenient to make it your base.
We work and live downtown and have never even come close to a dangerous situation with any of the homeless population. Have fun and enjoy our slice of heaven! Malaprop's is a great bookstore. We enjoyed the antique mall too. I think your daughter will really like Asheville.
